SBI to Charge for Online IMPS Transfers Above ₹25,000, Full Details Inside

The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced a revision in its Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) charges for retail customers, which will come into effect from August 15, 2025. According to the new rules, online IMPS transfers up to ₹25,000 will continue to remain free, ensuring that small and regular transactions are not affected.

However, for higher-value transactions, SBI will now charge a nominal fee. Transfers between ₹25,001 and ₹1,00,000 will attract a charge of ₹2 plus GST, transactions between ₹1,00,001 and ₹2,00,000 will be charged ₹6 plus GST, and amounts between ₹2,00,001 and ₹5,00,000 will be charged ₹10 plus GST.

The bank has clarified that these changes apply only to online IMPS transactions for retail customers, and branch-based IMPS charges will remain unchanged. For branch transactions, existing charges ranging from ₹2 plus GST for smaller amounts to ₹20 plus GST for higher amounts will continue as before.

SBI has also stated that certain categories of customers will remain exempt from paying these charges. This includes holders of Defence Salary Package, Para Military Salary Package, Indian Coast Guard Salary Package, Central Government Salary Package, Police Salary Package, Railway Salary Package, Shaurya Family Pension Accounts, Corporate Salary Package, State Government Salary Package, Startup Salary Package, and SBI Rishtey Family Savings Accounts.

In addition, the bank will revise IMPS charges for corporate customers from September 8, 2025. These will follow similar transaction slabs but will be applicable to corporate accounts.

With these changes, SBI aims to balance the cost of providing high-value instant transfer services while keeping small transactions free for the majority of its retail customers.
